Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted July 26, 2020 Journalists Share Posted July 26, 2020 Champion Maximum Security (c, 4, New Year’s Day–Lil Indy, by Anasheed) just got up after a long stretch duel to defeat Midcourt (Midnight Lute) by a nose while making his first start for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert in Saturday’s GII San Diego H. at Del Mar. Higher Power (Medaglia d’Oro) was third. Making his first attempt since the federal indictment of former trainer Jason Servis and a win in the $20-million Saudi Cup, the 2-5 favorite was hustled to the front as they passed the stands the first time, but backed off as Midcourt took over on the clubhouse turn. Forced to tap on the brakes heading into the backstretch, he chased in third on the outside and was under a ride rounding the far turn. He set his sights on Midcourt as they hit the top of the lane and needed the length of the stretch to run that one down by a whisker. The final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:44.54. Lifetime Record: 11-9-1-0. O-Gary & Mary West, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor & Derrick Smith; B-Gary & Mary West Stables Inc. (Ky); T-Bob Baffert.
