Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 3, 2020 Journalists Share Posted August 3, 2020 Fighting Mad (4, New Year’s Day–Smokey’s Love, by Forestry) sprinted to the front early and never looked back, collecting her first victory at the highest level in Del Mar’s GI Clement L. Hirsch S., a ‘Win and You’re In’ event for the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Uncontested through initial splits of :23.15 and :46.55, the Bob Baffert trainee turned for home with a snug lead over the battling duo of Ollie’s Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Ce Ce (Elusive Quality). Despite their best efforts, however, the winner of this season’s GII Santa Maria S. had the most left in the late stages, crossing the wire 3/4 of a length ahead of Ollie’s Candy, with Ce Ce farther back in third. Final time for the 8 1/2-furlong contest was 1:43.46. Lifetime Record: 8-5-1-0, $444,008. O-Gary and Mary West; B-Gary and Mary West Stables Inc.; T-Bob Baffert.
