Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 8, 2020 Journalists Share Posted August 8, 2020 SERENGETI EMPRESS (f, 4, Alternation-Havisham, by Bernardini) overcame a bad break to score a determined score in the GI Ballerina S. at Saratoga Saturday. Off a step slow, the bay hustled up to take her preferred position at the head of affairs, battling Letruska (Super Saver) through a white hot first quarter in :21.75. Continuing to knock heads as the half went up in a blazing :43.74, she was joined by Victim of Love (Speightstown) to her inside and Bellafina (Quality Road) to her outside at the top of the lane. However, Serengeti Empress refused to yield, pouring it on in the lane to secure the victory by a length in 1:21.63. Bellafina was the runner-up. Winner of the GI Kentucky Oaks last term, Serengeti Empress checked in second in Belmont’s GI Acorn S. last June and was close second after a gritty battle with two-time champion Covfefe (Into Mischief) in this venue’s GI Test S. Off the board in the GI Cotillion S., she was third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff and second in the GIII Houston Ladies Classic S. in January. Romping in the GII Azeri S. at Oaklawn in March, Serengeti Empress failed to fire when 11th in the GI Apple Blossom H. In April and was next seen finishing fourth in the GII Fleur de Lis H. June 27.
