Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 12, 2020 Journalists Share Posted August 12, 2020 Bob and Sue Donaldson’s Spun to Run (Hard Spun–Yawkey Way, by Grand Slam), last year’s clear-cut winner of the GI Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, has been retired from racing. The Juan Carlos Guerrero trainee blossomed in the second half of his sophomore season in 2019, finishing third in the GI Haskell Invitational S. behind eventual Maximum Security (New Year’s Day) in July before annexing the GIII Smarty Jones S. over a pair of next-out winners. He earned a gaudy 110 Beyer Speed Figure two starts later when romping in Parx’s M.P. Ballezzi Appreciation Mile S. in October, and backed up that performance while earning a 109 Beyer and besting heavy favorite Omaha Beach (War Front) in the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita. The dark bay had last been seen finishing second to Maximum Security in the GI Cigar Mile H. Dec. 7. “From day one this guy showed us his heart and determination, but most importantly, he showed us a mindset that was unlike any horse we had ever been around,” Bob Donaldson said. “With each start he just got better and more determined to simply outrun his competition.” Out of the stakes winner Yawkey Way, Spun to Run is a half to SW Tap It All (Tapizar). The $64,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old buy retires with earnings of $1,160,520 from a 12-5-2-3 record. Stud plans have not yet been determined for the son of leading sire Hard Spun (Danzig).
