Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 23, 2020 Journalists Share Posted August 23, 2020 MAXIMUM SECURITY (c, 4, New Year’s Day–Lil Indy) earned a first official win at 10 panels as the heavy favorite in Saturday evening’s GI TVG Pacific Classic S. at Del Mar while securing a starting spot in the starting gate for the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic. Last year’s GI Kentucky Derby winner before being taken down for interference, the Gary and Mary West homebred added two more Grade I wins that season to be named champion 3-year-old. He resurfaced to take the $20-million Saudi Cup in February, shortly before trainer Jason Servis was implicated in a high-profile doping scheme that has resulted in Maximum Security’s purse proceeds from that race being withheld. Maximum Security was transferred to Bob Baffert ahead of a nose victory from Midcourt (Midnight Lute) in the GII San Diego H. here July 25. Pounded down to 2-5 favoritism, Maximum Security led right from the outset but seemed to be coming under a busy ride heading for home. The colt continued to find more, however, and powered away late to best pesky pursuer Sharp Samurai (First Samurai) by some five lengths in 2:01.24. Midcourt edged defending champion Higher Power (Medaglia d’Oro) for third. Lifetime Record: 12-10-1-0. O-Gary & Mary West, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor & Derrick Smith. B-Gary & Mary West Stables, Inc. (Ky). T-Bob Baffert.
