Nyquist Filly Romps in Spinaway

Vequist (f, 2, Nyquist–Vero Amore, by Mineshaft) broke her maiden in style, romping home an eight-length winner of the GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga Sunday. Sent off at 6-1, the bay filly pressed pacesetting Esplanade (Daredevil) through fractions of :22.41 and :44.87. She grabbed control entering the stretch and sailed home an effortless winner. Esplanade was second and Lady Lilly (Nyquist) was third. Favored Beautiful Memories (Hard Spun) was away slowly and eased on the far turn. The time for the seven furlongs was 1:22.29.

Vequist is the fifth winner and second stakes winner for her freshman sire (by Uncle Mo). Nyquist was also represented by Gretzy the Great, winner of the Soaring Free S. at Woodbine.

Vequist, who RNA’d for $120,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, came up a nose short when second in her only previous trip to the post, going 4 1/2 furlongs at Parx July 29.
