Zoffany’s Thunder Moon Cuts a Dash In the National

Sunday’s G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National S. at The Curragh looked ultra-strong on paper and although Ballydoyle’s G2 Vintage S. winner Battleground (War Front) was scratched there was an exciting winner in Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez’s TDN Rising Star Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Earning that tag with a scintillating debut success over this course and distance Aug. 9, the 15-2 shot was holed up with nowhere to go inside the final two furlongs with Declan McDonogh looking for racing room. As it turned out, it came in plenty of time as the fleet-footed bay darted through a gap to cut down St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the final 75 yards. Surging to the line, he had 1 1/2 lengths to spare over the fast-finishing Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who denied fellow Ballydoyle runner St Mark’s Basilica the second spot by a short head.
