Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 10, 2020 Journalists Share Posted October 10, 2020 ‘TDN Rising Star’ HAPPY SAVER (c, 3, Super Saver–Happy Week, by Distorted Humor) remained perfect with a defeat of his elders in Belmont’s GI Jockey Club Gold Cup S., a “Win and You’re In” event for the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic. Rather than run against his own age group in the GI Preakness S. last weekend, he was pitted against his elders in this event, where he was dispatched at 2-1 while facing just four rivals. Away well from his rail draw, the homebred tracked favored Tacitus (Tapit) from a joint second along fellow sophomore Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) through an opening half-mile in :49.68. Allowing Mystic Guide to push the pacesetter as Happy Saver sat back into third through 3/4 of a mile in 1:13.61. Reasserting himself in the lane, Happy Saver slipped through on the fence to take control and held off a dogged attempt from Mystic Guide to win by 3/4 of a length with Tacitus in third. The final time for the 10 furlong test was 2:01.77. A good-looking debut winner going seven panels at Belmont June 20, Happy Saver followed suit with a decisive nine-panel allowance win at the Spa July 26 and captured Laurel’s Federico Tesio S. Sept. 7. Lifetime Record: 4-4-0-0. O/B-Wertheimer and Frere (KY); T- Todd Pletcher.
