Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted December 26, 2020 Journalists Share Posted December 26, 2020 Godolphin homebred Fair Maiden (f, 3, Street Boss–Shieldmaiden, by Smart Strike), a 20-1 outsider, strode to the lead late to earn a 2 1/2-length victory in the GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita Saturday. The chestnut filly rated off the pace and out in the clear, but was forced to wait for racing room as the field bunched up around the far turn. She angled out some six wide at the top of the lane and rallied stoutly, gliding to the lead and drawing away with ease. Golden Principal (Constitution) was second and Merneith (American Pharoah) was third. The time for the seven furlongs was 1:22.69. Fair Maiden, a close-up third over the Woodbine lawn in last year’s GI Natalma S., went to the sidelines following a 12th-place effort in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She resurfaced with a win in a six-furlong Churchill optional claimer Sept. 19 in her first start over conventional dirt. She was most recently fourth behind La Brea foes Merneith and Motivated Seller (Into Mischief) in the Nov. 7 Qatar Fort Springs S. at Keeneland. Lifetime Record: 8-4-1-1. O/B-Godolphin (Ky).
