Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted December 27, 2020 Journalists Share Posted December 27, 2020 Charlatan (c, 3, Speightstown–Authenticity, by Quiet American), making his first start since the May 2 GI Arkansas Derby, powered home a much-the-best winner of the GI Runhappy Malibu S. at Santa Anita Saturday. The chestnut colt was content to sit second as favored Nashville (Speightstown) took the field through fractions of :21.81 and :43.95. He rolled up to challenge the pacesetter at the top of the lane, but the expected match-up between the two speedy sophomores failed to develop as Charlatan grabbed command and Nashville began to falter. Charlatan was clear through three-quarters in 1:08.54 and sailed under the wire 4 1/2 lengths in front, completing the seven furlongs in 1:21.50. Express Train (Union Rags) was second and Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy) was third. Charlatan, a $700,000 KEESEP yearling, broke his maiden on debut at Santa Anita in February and romped by 10 1/4 lengths in a Mar. 14 optional claimer before shipping to Oaklawn Park for the Arkansas Derby. He was first by six lengths that day, but was disqualified due to a drug positive. Lifetime Record: 4-3-0-0, $67,200.
