Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 16, 2021 Journalists Share Posted January 16, 2021 There were a grand total of 99 mares bred in 2017 in Minnesota, the state owner Bob Lothenbach calls home. One of those 99 mares is now the dam of a stakes winner, as CHARLIE’S PENNY (f, 3, Race Day-Sweet Lorraine, by Warrior’s Reward) upset her much more fancied rivals in Saturday’s Silverbulletday S. at the Fair Grounds. Settled three wide on the track as heavily favored ‘TDN Rising Star’ Sun Path (Munnings) pressed soft fractions from the outside, Charlie’s Penny kicked into high gear three deep off the final corner, surged past a weakening Sun Path with relative ease and kicked home an easy winner. ‘Rising Star’ Souper Sensational (Curlin) was beaten for speed and raced in last in what marked her two-turn debut and closed nicely despite the lack of pace to be second. Moon Swag (Malibu Moon), in tight early, ran on to relegate Sun Path to fourth. A debut winner over the Arlington Poly last Sept. 17, Charlie’s Penny was a well-beaten fourth behind Souper Sensational in Woodbine’s Glorious Song S. Oct. 17. The gray bested ‘Rising Star’ Inject (Frosted) in a Churchill allowance Nov. 28 and was exiting a third-placed effort in the six-furlong Lettelier Memorial S. Dec. 19.
