The Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes is the featured event on Morphettville’s nine race card on Saturday afternoon. A field of 12 has assembled which includes four interstate gallopers looking to come and pinch the $122,250 on the line from the locals. The winner of the 2020 Lord Reims Stakes Eperdument goes around in this year’s race but will do so as a $26 shot despite a second place finish in the Listed Birthday Cup a fortnight ago.

The speed in the race comes from the New South Wales based and Freedman trained Mushaireb (#4). The likes of Charossa (#5) and Farooq (#6) will also look to push forward. Notably one of the market fancies The Long Arm (#3) will be giving the field a bit of a start here when he settles towards the rear of the field.

Odds of $1.80 has been posted for Tralee Rose (#12) from the Symon Wilde stable and it looks overs based on her dominant win in the Listed Bagot Handicap where she smashed her rivals by 7 lengths and looked to still have plenty left in the tank. She has won four times from five runs this campaign and the sole defeat came two runs back by half a length at Flemington on December 12. From barrier four, expect Tralee Rose to stalk the speed throughout the run, and with Jason Holder on board for the first time you would expect the mare to be too classy for the field assembled here.

The main danger to Tralee Rose will come from the Peter Gelagotis stable with The Long Arm (#3). His last start win at Caulfield showed that he performs at his best when settling back towards the rear of the field and sustaining a long run. With Mushaireb (#4) set to make this a genuine staying event it could be set up perfectly for a get back and run-on types. The question will be whether he can keep up with Tralee Rose over the concluding stages. If the field does not get too strung out by the leaders then he will be right in this in the concluding stages.

As we have seen at Morphettville in recent times, on-pace gallopers can be hard to run down and with Mushaireb coming to South Australia for the first time, the Freedman’s will have a winning plan in place. Jessica Eaton is in red hot form at the moment and steers front running rides as good as anyone in the state. If the gelding can see out a solid 2600m there’s no reason why he can not cause an upset.
