Caulfield horse racing tips – Saturday, February 20, 2021

It is Blue Diamond Stakes Day at Caulfield on Saturday with eight Group races set to be contested on a nine-part card. The featured event sees boom filly Enthaar line up as a short-priced favourite following two hugely impressive performances to begin her career. There are two other Group 1 races – the Futurity Stakes and the Oakleigh Plate – have also drawn talented fields. The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is in the true position, so we are set fair for cracking day of racing from 12:40pm AEDT.

Best Bet Of The Day

Race 1 – Neds Mornington Cup Prelude

The Listed Mornington Cup Prelude kickstarts Blue Diamond Stakes Day, and we will be looking to build a bank early with our best bet of the day going around in the opening event. Defibrillate (#4) looked to have done enough to get the outright win last time out over the 1800m here on January 30, but the judge was unable to split he and Hang Man and so declared it a dead heat. The step up to 2000m looks ideal, and the six-year-old gelding will be hard to hold out with only 56.5kg on his back. He and Billy Egan have formed a formidable partnership with five wins from seven starts together, and they should round up the likely leader, Wolfe (#3), in the shadows of the winning post.

Race 2 – Neds Zeditave Stakes

The first of the Group races sees It’sourtime (#5) start as a short-priced favourite following the scratching of Vowmaster. However, we are happy to take on the market elect in the Zeditave Stakes with Valaquenta (#3) looking well placed from the Godolphin yard. His first-up run was riddled with excuses, mainly that he was trapped four wide with no cover and faded badly as a result. Put a line through that run and look at his form and you will see that he has won at Caulfield when second up previously. With a genuine tempo on the cards, we expect to see him savaging the line late in the piece.

Race 3 – Neds Angus Armanasco Stakes

Eight three-year-old fillies are set to go around in the Group 3 Angus Armanasco Stakes, and we are with one at odds in Chica Fuerte (#2). Given she took out the Ethereal Stakes here back on October 17, we know she handles Caulfield quite well. With a genuine tempo expected from Malicorne (#3) and Safe Passage (#4), it could be set up perfectly for someone like Chica Fuerte to pounce on the vulnerable leaders. The favourite, Impecunious (#5), was impressive on her Australian debut back in December, but it remains to be seen what she actually beat on that day.

Race 4 – Premier Signs Mannerism Stakes

With a bit of luck we will have a bank built following a win by Defibrillate in the first so we can load up on Perfect Jewel (#1) in the Mannerism Stakes. In a small field of older mares, the resuming Grant & Alana Williams star looks well placed to come back a winner. In her spring campaign she was dominant first up at Caulfield over the 1200m; she gets an extra 200m for her first go this campaign, and we are happy to side with her. We have not seen her since the Tristarc Stakes on October 17, but she and William Pike should get the job done in a race where only Lunakorn (#7) poses any real danger.

Race 5 – Zircodata Autumn Classic

Despite proven performers like Khoekhoe (#1) and Young Werther (#3) going around in the Group 2 Autumn Classic, we are happy to go with Grahame Begg’s boom filly Butter Chicken (#11). This is a big step up from a Pakenham maiden on a Thursday, but with Jamie Kah on board and only 55kg on her back there is no reason she cannot handle it. She clearly has the quickest turn of foot in the race and looks a nice bet at $6.50, especially given plenty of her rival will want further.

Race 6 – Lamaro Sth Melbourne Futurity Stakes

A star-studded field of 10 has been assembled for the Group 1 Futurity Stakes, where Behemoth (#1), Arcadia Queen (#6) and Ole Kirk (#8) have all been well found in the market. However, we are going with the Kiwi mare Probabeel (#7), whose win in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes was utterly arrogant. She was trapped three wide with no cover in that run but still had enough left in the tank to put her rivals away in fine fashion. This is a step up in class, but who is to say she can’t put this classy field away? She will settle midfield and should get a nice cart into the race on the back of So Si Bon. With some of her rivals wanting further she looks primed to get the job done second up from a spell. Also, it is hard to ignore the work that Streets Of Avalon (#2) has put in so far this campaign.

Feature Race Of The Day

Race 7 – Neds Blue Diamond Stakes

How do you ignore the start to a career that Enthaar (#13) has put forward? Her win on debut in the Gimcrack Stakes was arrogant, and upon resumption over the 1000m here she showed she had improved even further. Expect Enthaar to take up the running from barrier 14, but she looks to have too much class for this field even if she is trapped wide. The likes of General Beau (#1), Anamoe (#5) and Ingratiating (#2) are obvious dangers, while the $41 on offer for Finance Tycoon (#3) looks a nice 1×3 play.

Race 8 – Neds Oakleigh Plate

A capacity field of 18 has assembled to battle it out for the final Group 1 of the day, and the winner could come from about 12 of the runners engaged. Ancestry (#6) and Anders (#18) will look to scorch the turf early on, which sets it up perfectly for Dirty Work (#2). He have seen what a turn of foot the Hawkes-trained stallion possesses, so expect Kerrin McEvoy to use barrier one to his advantage and settle on the back of the speed. Zoutori (#1) first up is always one to follow, while having only 50kg on his back could prove pivotal for Portland Sky (#15).

Value Bet Of The Day

Race 9 – Carlton Draught Peter Young Stakes

With plenty of proven Group performers going round in the Peter Young Stakes, it looks as tough to pick as any race on Saturday. Punters will be looking to get out with William Pike aboard Regal Power (#1), but we have settled with last-start winner Shared Ambition (#8). The Chris Waller-trained gelding is two from two at Caulfield, including a win over the 1800m trip, and has three wins from four second-up runs, so on paper he looks the best way to finish Blue Diamond Stakes Day.
