Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted February 28, 2021 Journalists Share Posted February 28, 2021 MONOMOY GIRL (m, 6, Tapizar–Drumette, by Henny Hughes), making her first start since hammering to Spendthrift Farm for an eye-popping $9.5 million at Fasig-Tipton November, tracked the speed and sped away in the lane to kick off her 6-year-old season with a score in the GIII Bayakoa S. Sunday at Oaklawn. Named champion 3-year-old for a once-beaten season that culminated in a GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff conquest, the chestnut famously lost her entire 2019 season due to a variety of setbacks and returned no worse for the wear with a four-for-four 2020 campaign that again finished with a Distaff victory and an Eclipse statuette, this time for champion older female. Knocked down to 1-5 favoritism over a sloppy track here, Monomoy Girl was away smoothly and set up shop three wide in third while tossing her head just a bit early on. Tracking from the clear through a :24.60 quarter, she crept closer past a :49.41 half and was driven by Florent Geroux three-eighths from home. Looking one-paced for just a few strides, she turned it on at the top of the lane, swept to the fore at the furlong pole and kicked clear to win well in hand by two lengths over Our Super Freak (Mineshaft). Sales History: $100,000 Ylg '16 KEESEP; $9,500,000 6yo '20 FTKNOV. Lifetime Record: Ch. 3yo Filly & Ch. Older Female, 16-14-2-0, $4,576,818. O-My Racehorse Stable, Spendthrift Farm & Madaket Stables; B-FPF LLC & Highfield Ranch (KY); T-Brad Cox.
