Randwick Guineas Day betting preview

It’s Randwick Guineas Day this Saturday with nine cracking races assembled. The Royal Randwick track is currently rated a Good 4, and the rail is out +3m for the entire circumference of the course. Race 1 is scheduled to jump at 12:40pm, with the Guineas to go at 4:25pm.

Race 1 – TOKYO CITY KEIBA FIREBALL STAKES (1100m)

A field of eight three-year-old sprinters has been assembled for the Listed Fireball Stakes, and top weight and favourite Wild Ruler looks hard to go past. The Snitzel colt won his first two runs last campaign before finishing third in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Classic at Flemington behind September Run and Swats That, two of the favourites for the Newmarket Handicap. He has won both of his trials leading up to this first-up assault, and he is unbeaten at Rosehill and over the 1100m trip. He will find the front from barrier one and be too quick for them.

Selections: 1-3-6-4

Race 2 – UNSW TODMAN STAKES (1200m)

The 2021 Todman Stakes is a race in three, according to the market, and there will plenty of differing opinions about who should go on top. Remarque has the ex-factor about him and looks the best of them at 1200m, but he comes into this off a minor setback. In saying that, he maps beautifully from barrier two, and if his recent trial is anything to go by, he is a serious racehorse. Stay Inside has been dominant in both of his wins and could be the fit horse on the scene late if he finds cover. Profiteer looks better suited over shorter distances.

Selections: 7-5-1-2

Race 3 – YARRAMAN PARK REISLING STAKES (1200m)

The fillies will go toe-to-toe over 1200m in the 2021 Reisling Stakes, which will serve as a major lead up to the Golden Slipper. We are siding with unbeaten Canberra-trained filly Pretty Woman should she start in this and not the Black Opal on Sunday. Barrier four is ideal for the flashy chestnut, as she will bounce on the bunny and run them into the ground. The 1200m is a query, but she has yet to be released into fourth gear by the looks. She is a nice each-way price to find out.

Selections: 5-3-1-6

Race 4 – RANDWICK CITY STAKES (2000m)

Sacramento and Mount Popa share favouritism in the Randwick City Stakes, with the former an easing market elect and the latter very well backed early. Sacramento has progressed through the grades very nicely and made it three straight with a victory in the Parramatta Cup a fortnight ago. He maps to get a soft lead in this too, as it is unlikely that the only other speed influence in the race, his stablemate Entente, will serve it up to him. Mount Popa on the other hand will be the fresh horse on the scene second up, and he gets to carry 1.5kg less than his main rival. They are tough to split, but we will side with the Hawkes gelding Mount Popa – only just.

Selections: 7-2-4-5

Race 5 – HYLAND RACE COLOURS CHALLENGE STAKES (1000m)

Nature Strip is a very hot odds-on favourite to win the Challenge Stakes after winning the Group 1 Lighting Stakes three weeks ago, but his tendency to over-race has us a touch cautious. Jumping from the outside alley, he could overdo it early trying to take on Eduardo in a similar style to the way The Everest was run in the spring. Written Beauty has plenty of ability and upside, gets in light at the weights and maps to take a sit behind the hot tempo, so we will back her to beat the favourite.

Selections: 8-1-5-6

Race 6 – FUJITSU GENERAL WENONA GIRL QUALITY (1200m)

NEXT BEST

James Cummings’ Entente is making a name for herself with five wins and four placings from her 10 career starts, including a near four-length victory just two weeks ago. She steps out to the 1200m and back on to a dry track, which looks perfect for the Lonhro mare. Rachel King stays aboard and she maps perfectly from barrier four to watch the race unfold before unleashing with her devastating turn of foot. She can make it back-to-back wins in this.

Selections: 6-1-10-2

Race 7 – MOSTYN COPPER RANDWICK GUINEAS (1600m)

BEST BET
We are pretty excited to see Aegon back at the races again after he won the Hobartville Stakes a fortnight ago in brilliant style. The son of Sacred Falls remains unbeaten in five starts having won his first four back home in New Zealand, including a Group 1 win at the mile there. Drawn in the middle of the pack for the 2021 Randwick Guineas, he should get a perfect run under Hugh Bowman and be finishing off two to their one. He is a genuine star and should cement himself as the Doncaster Mile favourite after this.

Selections: 1-7-13-3

Race 8 – HEINEKEN CANTERBURY STAKES (1300m)

The second of the Group 1s is the 1300m Canterbury Stakes, where race favourite Bivouac should romp to victory. The three-time Group 1 winner ran second in The Everest before trouncing his rivals in the VRC Sprint on Stakes Day last year, and then he came out with a good-enough fifth in the Lightning Stakes over 1000m behind Nature Strip. He looked to have a bit of his sprint taken out of him on that occasion, so up to the 1300m should be his go in a much easier race. He is likely to settle one out, one back from barrier eight and should make it four Group 1 wins.

Selections: 1-7-6-8

Race 9 – SHARP EXTENSIVE IT ASPIRATION QUALITY (1600m)

BEST VALUE

The last race of the day is a tricky way to wind up proceedings, but we are quietly confident about the chances of Cliff’s Art in the Aspiration Quality. The German mare has won four of her nine races, including a Listed win at Hoppegarten last August, and closed off nicely in her Australian debut a fortnight ago when reeling off the best final 800m sectional of the race. She maps similarly here from the wide alley, but there is the potential of going forward with front-running rider Tim Clark booked. She has won three times on Good going too, so the credentials are solid.
