Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 20, 2021 Journalists Share Posted March 20, 2021 HOT ROD CHARLIE (c, 3, Oxbow–Indian Miss, by Indian Charlie), a half-brother to champion sprinter Mitole (Eskendereya), gutted out a determined victory Saturday in New Orleans, setting a new track record in the GII Louisiana Derby. Running under the name of trainer Doug O'Neill's assistant Leandro Mora, the 5-2 shot seized the early advantage, but was instantly joined by Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) with Mandaloun (Into Mischief) in a close third through a half-mile in :47.04. Midnight Bourbon drew even entering the far turn and made a race of it in the lane, but Hot Rod Charlie kept on finding to forge clear of his foe late and win by a length in 1:55.06. Midnight Bourbon held second over O Besos (Orb). Graduating at fourth asking going a mile at Santa Anita Oct. 2, Hot Rod Charlie finished a close second behind champion Essential Quality (Tapit) at whopping odds of 94-1 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland Nov. 6.
