Sent off the prohibitive favorite at 1-5, 'TDN Rising Star' GAMINE (f, 4, Into Mischief–Peggy Jane, by Kafwain) looked to have her five rivals in Saturday's GI Derby City Distaff squarely over a barrel, and so it proved, as the $1.8-million Fasig-Tipton Midlantic topper from 2019 repelled a mid-stretch challenge from Sconsin (Include) and opened up to score by about five lengths in the first Grade I on the Derby undercard. Gamine recovered from a slight bobble at the break and easily made the front, getting the opening quarter-mile in a pedestrian :23.15 while traveling several paths off the inside down the backstretch. Still just galloping along, unpressured, through a half in ::46.08, Gamine took them into the stretch, but soon had company in the form of 2020 GII Eight Belles S. winner Sconsin. But the bid was short-lived, as Gamine rebroke and put daylight on her rivals to the wire. The reigning champion female sprinter and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner, Gamine returned to action with a handy success in the Apr. 4 GIII Las Flores S. at Santa Anita.
