Flagstaff Takes Wild Finish In Churchill Downs

They were stretched six across the track as they approached the wire of Saturday's GI Churchill Downs S., but in the end, it was the veteran FLAGSTAFF (g, 7, Speightstown–Indyan Giving, by A.P. Indy) who wanted it most, as he charged home from between rivals to score narrowly. Right up and on an honest early pace, Flagstaff eventually allowed the leading group–headed up by Bango (Congrats)–to go on with it and raced in clear air from fifth. Sensing an opportunity to get off the rail, Luis Saez angled Flagstaff out into the five path and the gelding looped rivals traveling apparently ominously well at the quarter pole. Bango proved a stubborn leader and held the call into the final eighth of a mile, but the sweepers were coming. Champion Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect) seemed to have the momentum down the center of the track and may have stuck his nose in front at one point, but Flagstaff knifed through between the Eclipse Award winner and Lexitonian (Speightstown) five off the rail in the dying strides to take it in a blanket finish. Lexitonian was second, just ahead of Whitmore in third. Also in the finish were Hog Creek Hustle (Overanalyze) one away from the rail and Phat Man (Munnings) right at the fence. Lifetime Record: 19-7-6-3. O-Lane's End Racing & Hronis Racing; B-Summer Wind Farm (KY); T-John Sadler.
