Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted May 1, 2021 Journalists Posted May 1, 2021 Robert and Lawana Low's COLONEL LIAM (c, 4, Liam's Map–Amazement, by Bernadini) was sent off the 7-5 chalk to take his current winning streak to four in Saturday's GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic at Churchill Downs. But at the end of nine entertaining furlongs, he was forced to share the spoils, as Klaravich Stables' DOMESTIC SPENDING (GB) (g, 4, Kingman {GB}–Urban Castle, by Street Cry {Ire}) emerged from the pack late to arrive on even terms. Colonel Liam, a touch keen passing under the wire for the first time, found the perfect spot in the box seat, as California raider Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute) enjoyed a cheap time of things on the engine. Colonel Liam was first to come after Smooth Like Strait in upper stretch, and made what appeared to be the winning move a furlong from home. But Domestic Spending, given a quiet time of it towards the back of the field for the opening six furlongs, followed his stablemate and defending champion Digital Age (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) into the lane, then jumped out of the ground in the final 150 yards to earn a piece.
