Doc Brown - Back to the Future

We said it yesterday, but we will say it again this morning – how bloody good is the ‘Bool? The Warrnambool May Racing Carnival heads the #PuntDrunk agenda for another day as the carnival closes with the featured Grand Annual Steeplechase and the Warrnambool Cup. Add in the fact the fields for the weekend have been released, and the energy levels in the Punt Drunk office are at an all-time high.

Welcome back, Brett Scott

This is an amazing result! The Statesman wins the Galleywood Hurdle for trainer, @BScott_Racing. ❤@AusJumpsRacing @wboolracingclub pic.twitter.com/m6KHTc7ZFo

Rewind the tape five weeks, Brett Scott had just been released from hospital after one of his horses in training kicked him in the skull. But yesterday, the racing gods were smiling down on him as he took out the 2021 Galleywood Hurdle with The Statesman. He has four Grand Annual Steeplechase wins to his name as a jockey, but his success in yesterday’s Galleywood was his first in the featured event as a trainer. From being airlifted to the Alfred Hospital and being placed in an induced coma to claiming the Galleywood, it is one of the best stories we will see all year. The Statesman was a $17 roughie heading into the race but ended up putting three lengths on his closest rival. We tip our hat to you, Scotty, and we’ll shout you a beer at the Whaler’s next year!

Turkey Legs returns for Grand Annual

“It’s the only comeback I’ll make – my wife Lauren’s burning the saddle when I get home – but it’s one of the fancies and I’m hoping for the proper fairytale ending.”

Shane Jackson, after coming out of retirement to partner Bit Of A Lad in the Grand Annual today #RacingPulse

— RSN927am (@RSN927) May 5, 2021

Shane Jackson is to jumps racing as a beer is to the team here at Punt Drunk. The recently retired jockey is making a last-minute return to the pigskin when he teams up with Bit Of A Lad in the Grand Annual later today. On the quick backup from the Brierly on Tuesday, Bit Of A Lad is a $4 chance with online bookmakers to win the 5500m feature. Jackson retired after the Jericho Cup meeting in November but is back to have a crack at the $350,000 race. Who can blame him? Riding for the Maher & Eustace team, Jackson has the chance to claim the biggest jumps race in the country with his only booking for the day. It would be absolute scenes if the legendary jock got up.

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

The Nick Olive-trained Nephradiva was a dominant winner over the 900m at Albury on April 26 and looks well placed to bring up consecutive wins to begin her career. From barrier one, expect the Winning Rupert filly to be taken to the front by Billy Owen. As long as she jumps on terms with them, she should be too quick for this lot as she steps up to the 1000m. It looks to be the perfect way to kick off the day on the punt for Wagga Town Plate Day.
