Staged in dour conditions for late-May, Saturday's G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh will shine like a beacon for Jim Bolger as Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) edged out Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in a thriller. Sent straight to the front by Rory Cleary, the 8-1 shot was tackled and possibly briefly headed by his G1 2000 Guineas-winning stablemate a furlong from home but dug in to prevail by a short head, with 3 1/4 lengths back to Van Gogh (American Pharoah) in third. The winner, who was winning his second top-flight race after the G1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster in October, will be headed to the June 5 G1 Epsom Derby now for another showdown with Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who he had trailed on his comeback in Leopardstown's G3 G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial May 9.
