The Group 2 Premier’s Cup returns to its traditional 2400m distance for the first time in 20 years and will provide a springboard into the Brisbane Cup in two weeks’ time. A field of 13 has been assembled for the $200,000 feature, including last start Warrnambool Cup winner, Le Don De Vie who is the $3.60 favourite, with Rondinella ($5), Spirit Ridge ($6), Paths Of Glory and Southern France (both $10). The race favourite looks to be the sole speed influence in the race, although Spirit Ridge has been known to be positive as well. Horsebetting.com.au brings you our top three picks for this Premier’s Cup at Eagle Farm, as well as a $100 Betting Strategy.

After getting a glorious run behind the leader in the Warrnambool Cup earlier in the month, Le Don De Vie kicked clear in the straight to win by a comfortable 2.75 lengths, defeating Heart Of Puissance who has since won convincingly at Flemington. Set to jump from barrier six under Mark Zahra, the five-year-old gelding should be able to make the running his own and control the speed to win again. We saw Zaaki romp in to win the Doomben Cup last week, and Le Don De Vie is by the same sire, Leroidesanimaux, so we could see a repeat effort this time around.

Speaking of Zaaki, Richard & Michael Freedman’s grey gelding, Paths Of Glory was able to defeat the Doomben Cup winner when they met in the Group 3 JRA Plate on April 24 at Randwick, so that form has to be respected. Craig Williams will do the steering from barrier three, and with the blinkers on, he should be able to settle a bit closer to be in the box seat. 2400m is going to suit him down to the ground, and if the runs come, he can be filling the placings.

Carif finished a long way behind Paths of Glory in the JRA Plate, but then ran home strongly to finish fourth in the Gosford Cup behind Polly Grey last time out over 2100m. The Snowden-trained gelding is bred to stay, so we admit he will be better suited to the Brisbane Cup in a fortnight at two mile, but this could be a nice race for him to really stake his claim going forward. Jamie Kah is an added bonus, and without a great deal of speed in the race he should be able to cross over and be handy to the speed and make it a staying test.
