Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted June 5, 2021 Journalists Share Posted June 5, 2021 Godolphin homebred Essential Quality (c, 3, Tapit–Delightful Quality, by Elusive Quality) turned back a stubborn Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) down the lane to win the GI Belmont S. and give his sire his fourth winner of the Test of the Champion. The gray colt, whose lone career loss was a solid fourth-place finish in the GI Kentucky Derby five weeks ago, settled off the pace as Hot Rod Charlie set a torrid pace while pressed by Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}) through fractions of :22.78 and :46.49. Essential Quality began inching closer midway down the backstretch and loomed a threat with a four-wide move on the far turn. He engaged the pacesetter nearing the stretch and looked set to blow on by, but Hot Rod Charlie refused to give in, yielding only grudgingly late as Essential Quality pulled away in the final sixteenth. Rombauer (Twirling Candy) was third. The time for the 1 1/2 miles was 2:27.11. The Belmont victory capped a big day for Sheikh Mohammed's operation, which earlier in the day won the G1 Epsom Derby and finished one-two in the GI Just a Game S. Lifetime Record: Ch. 2yo Colt, MGISW, 7-6-0-0. O/B-Godolphin. T-Brad Cox.
