Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted June 13, 2021 Journalists Share Posted June 13, 2021 MANDALOUN (c, 3, Into Mischief–Brooch, by Empire Maker) the current runner-up and possible eventual GI Kentucky Derby winner depending on how the Medina Spirit (Protonico) betamethasone positive plays out, overcome a rough trip to get the job done at 1-5 in Sunday's Pegasus S. at Monmouth. Forced to steady out of it sharply in the early stages, the bay has plenty of work to do towards the back of the pack as GIII Gotham S. upsetter Weyburn (Pioneerof the Nile) took command on the home bend. Mandaloun swung wide under a busy Florent Geroux approaching the straight, and he took over in upper stretch en route to what seemed likely to be a convincing success. Weyburn had other ideas, however, and battled back improbably to cut the winner's margin to a neck. Mandaloun stopped the clock in 1:44.63. Opening his account two-for-two in the fall, the 'TDN Rising Star' was third at odds-on in the GIII Lecomte S. at Fair Grounds in January. He scored a breakthrough success in that venue's GII Risen Star S. Feb. 13, but was a puzzling sixth behind Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) in the GII Louisiana Derby Mar. 20. The Brad Cox pupil belied nearly 27-1 odds in the May 1 Kentucky Derby, coming up a half-length short while earning a career-best 101 Beyer Speed Figure. He was using Sunday's race as a prep for next month's GI Haskell Invitational S. Lifetime Record: 7-4-1-1. O/B-Juddmonte Farms Inc (Ky). T-Brad H Cox.
