Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted July 13, 2021 Journalists Share Posted July 13, 2021 Hall of Fame jockey John Rotz passed away peacefully Monday at his home in Warrensburg, Illinois after battling a number of brain diseases, including dementia. He was 86. “Any time he was on top of a horse he was happy,” said his widow, Mary. “What was weird was that here was a guy that was so competitive, yet he was so humble. He had these gentlemanly qualities. It was almost like that the two just didn't go together.” Ritz had two Classic wins, in the 1962 Preakness with Greek Money and in the 1970 Belmont with High Echelon. He had 2,907 career wins and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1983. Upon his retirement, he worked as a steward and competed in western riding competitions, which he did until he was 81. In 1987, he won the National Reining Horse Association Novice Horse Non-Pro World Championship. This story will be updated.
