Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted July 17, 2021 Journalists Share Posted July 17, 2021 Saturday's running of the GI TVG.com Haskell S. took a dramatic turn entering the final furlong, as third favorite Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) went down when in tight between 'TDN Rising Star' MANDALOUN (c, 3, Into Mischief–Brooch, by Empire Maker) and odds-on Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow). The latter, third in the GI Kentucky Derby and runner-up in the GI Belmont S., was ruled to have caused interference, causing Midnight Bourbon to fall, and Mandaloun was awarded the victory. 'TDN Rising Star' Following Sea (Runhappy) was put immediately into play by Joel Rosario, but had Midnight Bourbon lapped to his outisde, as Hot Rod Charlie and Mandaloun raced as a team a couple of lengths farther back. Following Sea retained the call as they hit the far turn, but Midnight Bourbon rolled up, apparently full of horse, to take charge with five-sixteenths to come. He was soon besieged, from either side, with Hot Rod Charlie gaining four wide off the final corner and Mandaloun making ominous headway one away from the inside. The two market leaders hooked up at the eighth pole, but Hot Rod Charlie came in, taking the path of Midnight Bourbon and causing the incident. Hot Rod Charlie was home narrowly best over Mandaloun, but was taken down and placed last. Following Sea was moved up to second ahead of Antigravity (First Samurai) in third. Midnight Bourbon appeared to pick himself off the dirt and appeared to gallop soundly under the line. Mandaloun, who earns an all-expenses-paid trip to the GI Breeders' Cup Classic, is the 10th Grade I winner for Into Mischief and, like champion Covfefe, is bred from an Unbridled-line mare. Mandaloun entered the Haskell off a victory in the TVG.com Pegasus S. June 13. Lifetime Record: 8-5-1-1. O-Juddmonte; B-Juddmonte Farms (KY); T-Brad Cox.
