Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted July 22, 2021 Journalists Share Posted July 22, 2021 What Doomben Races Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, July 24, 2021 First Race 11:23pm AEST Watch Live Streaming Live at Sportsbet HorseBetting’s Queensland tipster brings you his best bets and top quaddie numbers for the nine-race card at Doomben this Saturday. The track is rated a Soft 5 as of Thursday morning, but with clear weather all week, it should dry out to a Good 4 by the first race this weekend. The rail will be in the 3.5m position for the entire course, and the first race is set to go at 11:23am AEST. Doomben Best Bet: Safeeya Now that we are in the off-season in Brisbane, we get to see some nice horses that aren’t quite ‘carnival horses’ come to the fore and contest some fairly weak races. Although this is one of the toughest races of the day with the likes of Grafton Guineas winner Tamilaide and a couple of handy ones who come through the Group 3 Winx Guineas as well, but the $6 on offer for Safeeya is too good to refuse. The Lee Freedman-trained filly has had one start in Queensland and could not have been anymore dominant when winning at Eagle Farm in Class 3 company. The daughter of Fastnet Rock has some good form in Victoria, including a third to Ayrton at Caulfield, and now looks ready to bring that form to Queensland. While her main market rivals are nearing the end of their winter campaigns, Safeeya is on the up. With Jim Byrne sticking and very little speed in the race, she is going to be mighty hard to beat. Best BetRace 3 – Safeeya (#6) $6 with Sportsbet Next Best at Doomben: Bay of Kiel There are a couple of favourites throughout the afternoon that look hard to beat, but Saturday looks a nice day to shop around a bit and find some value, so that is exactly what we are doing. The opening race of the day sees a field of just eight two-year-olds contest a 1615m 2YO Handicap, and the one that we expect to be hardest to beat is the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Bay Of Kiel. While the 1615m journey first-up looks far from ideal, this filly is by Redoute’s Choice out of Bart Cummings’ Crown Oaks-winning mare Faint Perfume, so she is bred to be a stayer and should handle the mile no worries. Having had only one start to date, Bay Of Kiel finished down the track behind Four Moves Ahead over 1150m on the Kensington track where she simply looked outsprinted. She has shown ability in all of her trials, and this field certainly does not have the quality of Four Moves Ahead, Ruby Kisses, Mura Mura and Laurelin. Next BestRace 1 – Bay Of Kiel (#4) $5 with Sportsbet Best Value at Doomben: Potro Duro Not often would we tip a last-start Casino winner, yet here we are! Potro Duro was a good winner of the Beef Week Cup on May 28th when getting up in the final stride to defeat At Witz End, who has franked that form by winning on Ipswich Cup Day and then bolting in at Doomben a fortnight ago to beat Roman Aureus by 2.25 lengths. The Toby & Trent Edmonds-trained gelding has had a quiet time since his Casino win, having had just the one trial at the Gold Coast over 1000m. In here with 56kg under the masterful hoop Brad Stewart, he is going to get every chance from barrier seven. He goes to the 1350m, where he is a four-time winner, and gets on to a Good track, which he does his best racing on. With luck in running, the big grey can give us a massive sight at big odds in the get-out stakes.
