Coolmore's Santa Barbara (Ire) (f, 3, Camelot {GB}–Senta's Dream {GB}, by Danehill), a dramatic late-running victoress of the July 10 GI Belmont Oaks Invitational, made it two-for-two in the U.S. with a powerful four-length victory in the GI Beverly D. S. at Arlington Saturday. The even-money favorite raced under cover in third as Mean Mary (Scat Daddy) set the pace through fractions of :24.57 and :49.34 with Naval Laughter (Midshipman) in close attendance. Santa Barbara was tipped out three wide at the top of the lane and surged to the lead with dominating strides. The time for the 1 3/16 miles was 1:54.55. Mean Mary just held off Lemista (Ire) (Raven's Pass) for second. The win gave trainer Aidan O'Brien his first-ever score in the Beverly D.
Lifetime Record: 6-3-1-0. O-Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith. B-Whisperview Trading Ltd (Ire). T-Aidan O'Brien.
