High Oak (c, 2, Gormley–Champagne Sue, by Elusive Quality) became his freshman sire's first stakes winner in the GII Saratoga Special S. at Saratoga Saturday. The 10-1 shot sat just off the pace as Gunite (Gun Runner) and Doctor Jeff (Street Boss) battled through an opening quarter in :21.82. He rolled up to challenge the two favorites entering the straight after a half in :44.93 and strode clear to an easy four-length victory. The bay colt completed the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.53. Gunite was second and Nakatomi (Firing Line) was third.
High Oak got up late to graduate by a neck in his June 26 debut at Belmont Park in his only previous trip to the post. Gormley has also been represented by GIII Sanford S. runner-up Headline Report. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0.
