Clairiere Gets Her Grade I in Cotillion

Favored at 13-5 to finally break through at the top level, Stonestreet Stables' CLAIRIERE (f, 3, Curlin–'TDN Rising Star' Cavorting, by Bernardini) circled up four wide under a full head of steam into the Parx stretch and rolled by all her rivals en route to a convincing success in Saturday's GI Cotillion S. Settled in the latter third of the field, Clairiere was forced to steady and take evasive action off the heels of Army Wife (Declaration of War) midway around the first turn, but settled in a nice rhythm as second favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' Always Carina (Malibu Moon) set a modest tempo in advance of Obligatory (Curlin). Asked to lengthen her stride right at the three-eighths pole, Clairiere traveled powerfully outside of Army Wife into the stretch and powered down the center of the track en route to a convincing success. Obligatory rounded out another Grade I exacta for Curlin, whose Stonestreet-bred 'Rising Star' daughter Malathaat accounted for Clairiere last time in the Alabama S. at Saratoga. Clairiere is the 16th top-level scorer for Curlin and second out of a mare by the late Bernardini (Paris Lights the other). Bernardini is now the damsire of 12 Grade I/Group 1 winners.
