The second edition of the Battler’s Cup at Bendigo received an incredible 94 eligible entries – the response from trainers such that the entire race meeting at Bendigo tonight is made up of 12 heats of the tier 3 event.

The eight fastest heat winners will progress to the $5,000 to-the-winner final on Bendigo Cup night – Saturday 16 October – while the four slowest heat winners and four fastest second placegetters will qualify for the Battler’s Cup Consolation worth $2,100 to the winner.

“The response to last year’s inaugural Battler’s Cup was outstanding and saw 10 heats run, which justified the push to conduct the race and run it alongside the Bendigo Cup, but to get 12 heats this year, with so many racing options available, the club is extremely happy,” said Bendigo GRA Manager, Troy Harley.

Harley added: “The BGRA prides itself on being an industry and participant focused club and does its best to cater for all types of greyhounds where possible, so it’s great to see the support this race has received and I think it is a terrific way to kick off the Bendigo Cup Carnival with a full meeting of heats for a Tier 3 feature event.”

Some 59 individual trainers will be represented by the 94 eligible greyhounds drawn, including Matthew Edwards and his inaugural Battler’s Cup champ Steel Magnolia.

Tonight’s meeting is the first of five race meetings that make up the 2021 Bendigo Cup Carnival, where more than $300,000 in stakes will be on offer across multiples feature events.

Race 1 on tonight’s Battler’s Cup heat night will leave the boxes at 6.47pm, with heats of the Group 2 Bendigo Cup to take place this Saturday night.
