Racing heads to Gifford Hill on Friday afternoon for Murray Bridge Cup Day, and HorseBetting’s South Australian form analyst presents his best bets and quaddie selections for the nine-part card. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is in the true position, and the meeting is set to get underway at 12:10pm ACDT (12:40pm AEDT).

Murray Bridge Cup – Lord Vladivostok

The feature event at Murray Bridge on Friday is the Listed Murray Bridge Cup over 1600m, and we expect the Michael Hickmott-trained Lord Vladivostok to walk away with the title. The five-year-old son of Tavistock ran an eye-catching second at Morphettville on October 2, suggesting he was one to be with at his next start. He has a formidable second-up record (3: 2-0-1) including a win at 1600m when two out from a spell. The slight query is where he gets from barrier 11, but if Kayla Crowther can have him settled in the first half a dozen with cover, it could be all over nice and early. He has a nice turn of foot, and considering he took out the Group 3 R A Lee Stakes in the autumn, he clearly has the class to take a race like this out with an eye on some of the Group 1s in WA in November.

Best Bet at Murray Bridge – Valuable Witness

Our best bet of the day comes up in the final race when David Jolly and Kayla Crowther combine with Valuable Witness over 1000m. The three-year-old son of Star Witness was hitting the line nicely when first-up at Morphettville on October 2 and looked to be one to follow going forward if he can get a race run suited to his liking. He is a get-back-and-run-on type of horse, and with a genuine tempo expected, we anticipate he will get the last look at them in the home straight. He has a nice turn of foot and returns to the track and distance that he won at on debut on April 21, and we expect he will make it two wins from two starts at the Murray Bridge 1000m.

Best BetRace 9 – Valuable Witness (#12) $2.70 with Sportsbet

Murray Bridge Value Bet – Spiritual Gal

John O’Connor and Karl Zechner are set to combine with Spiritual Gal, who returned from a 16-week spell with a third-place finish at Morphettville on October 2. Having led the field up over 1000m, the three-year-old Wandjina filly weakened late to go down by 2.5 lengths but showed she had returned in much better form than when she headed to the paddock. She once again meets Johnny Thunder, who finished three-quarters of a length in front of her at Morphettville, but we expect the front-running nature and 54kg for Spiritual Gal to be the difference. If Zechner can get her to settle on the rail, or at worst outside the leader, she will be hard to run down at a nice price.
