A successful global partnership celebrated another international victory overnight when the aptly-named Almanzor colt Franz won at Haydock in England at the first time of asking.

The two-year-old is owned by Nicolas de Chambure’s Haras d’Etreham and Brendan and Jo Lindsay’s Cambridge Stud, who also raced and now shuttle the youngster’s sire and the multiple Group One-winning stallion Hello Youmzain.

“The relationship kicked off in 2018 with Almanzor so it’s now four years and two stallions and it has worked out extremely well, we have been very fortunate,” Cambridge Stud Chief Executive Officer Henry Plumptre said.

Franz is trained by Kevin Ryan, who also prepared Hello Youmzain to win the Gr.1 Diamond jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Royal Ascot and the Gr.1 Haydock Sprint Cup (1200m).

“Nicolas named this horse after the French and New Zealand alliance,” Plumptre said.

“I’ve spoken to Kevin and he said he would have been delighted if the horse had run fourth.

“He said it had only been in the last month that the colt had come to hand and put up his hand to say I need to have a run. He’ll put him out now and Kevin said we’ll all have a lot of fun with him next year.

“After he hit the front, he pricked his ears and was looking around so it was a good effort. As the Racing Post said, he idled to the line.”

A half-brother to the Listed winner UAE Jewel, Franz was purchased by Haras d’Etreham and Cambridge Stud at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and is a son of the Galileo mare Gemstone.
