HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst brings you his best bets, quaddie numbers and Moree Cup selection for the meeting at Moree on Friday afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course. The first race of the afternoon is set to jump at 1:04pm AEDT, with the running of the Cup to close out the day at 5:25pm.

Moree Cup Best Bet – La Tigresa

Will Freedman and Brandon Griffiths combine in the Moree Cup with five-year-old mare La Tigresa. The daughter of Epaulette has only raced once over the past 12 months, finishing five lengths off the winner when sixth at Tamworth, but her form at the back-end of 2020 was certainly good enough for this. With placings behind Castel Sant’angelo, Steely and Super jumping off the page, only bad luck should beat this one here. Now second-up, La Tigresa will be fitter for the run and better for the experience given she was 12 months off the racing scene, while the rise from 1200m to 1400m will suit her to a tee. She also goes from racing on an unsuitable Heavy 8 track at Tamworth to a Good 4 here, so we are happy to be with her in the Cup.

Moree Best Bet – The Big Seal

In the second leg of the quaddie, The Big Seal goes around in what looks to be a very winnable maiden for this two times runner-up. The three-year-old son of Your Song started as a $1.70 favourite on debut at the Sunshine Coast when in David Vandyke’s stable but could only manage to run second to Hard Reyva. He then relocated to the Clint Lundholm stable in Dubbo and ran second at Coonamble. The Big Seal has led in both runs to date and has been beaten a combined 4.2 lengths, but he drops back to 950m and so should take some serious running down, especially from barrier one. A senior rider in Ben Looker has been booked to ride the three-year-old, which will only add to his winning chances.

Next Best Bet – Pyrmont

Pyrmont has quality form in the city, including a placing behind Marboosha at two-years-old where he finished in front of subsequent Group 1 winner Forbidden Love. Formerly with David Payne and now with Peter Sinclair, this four-year-old gelding has been knocking on the door in his two country New South Wales runs. Having gone down by half a length first-up at Tamworth, the son of Ad Valorem then found the step back in trip to 1100m too sharp at Coonamble when beaten five lengths by Bean Hot. Back to 1300m will suit this horse down to the ground, and with Ashley Morgan on from barrier six, he should be able get the gun run behind the speed. Form around Wild Ruler, The Bopper and Malkovich reads extremely well for a Class 2 at Moree on a Friday. We would be disappointed if he can’t win this; the race is on a silver platter for him.

Best Value At Moree – Rebate

We’re not often too keen on backing one out of the Picnics, but in this instance, Mudgee to Moree doesn’t read all that bad. Rebate has had 12 starts for four minor placings, and while he is yet to break through for that elusive maiden win, he hasn’t been too far away. The Sally Torrens-trained gelding went around on October 23, finishing just over half a length off the winner in an 1100m Maiden Plate at Mudgee, and is now on the six-day turnaround and out to 1300m. The four-year-old son of Reward For Effort has now had five starts for Torrens, with two runner-up performances topping the highlights reel, but what he did prior to that was actually pretty good. Previously with Greg Eurell, Rebate finished 8.75 lengths off talented gallopers The Garden and Sandy Prince in a maiden at Geelong in July, with that race producing three subsequent winners as well as one runner who finished second to Gunstock, who is the second favourite for Saturday’s Victoria Derby. He can break through here.
