Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted November 1, 2021 Journalists Share Posted November 1, 2021 Races like the Melbourne Cup have a long and fabled history which have produced a litany of facts and figures that can help us find the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner. Our experts have already given you their Melbourne Cup best bets and produced our indepth 2021 Melbourne Cup runner by runner race preview, so without distracting from their sound logic, we’re going to find you the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner by applying the Melbourne Cup statistics of all previous winners. Lets start with the 2021 Melbourne Cup field and whittle it down horse by horse. 2021 Melbourne Cup Field No. Silks Horse Trainer Jockey Barrier Weight Odds 1 Twilight Payment Joseph O’Brien Jye McNeil 2 58kg $11 2 Incentivise Peter Moody Brett Prebble 16 57kg $2.50 3 Spanish Mission Andrew Balding Craig Williams 14 57kg $9 4 Verry Elleegant Chris Waller James McDonald 19 57kg $15 5 Explosive Jack C Maher & D Eustace John Allen 4 54kg $51 6 The Chosen One M Baker & A Forsman Damian Lane 5 54kg $61 7 Delphi A & S Freedman Damien Oliver 3 53.5kg $19 9 Selino Chris Waller Ron Stewart 24 53.5kg $151 10 Johnny Get Angry Denis Pagan Lachlan King 22 53kg $101 11 Knights Order G Waterhouse & A Bott Daniel Stackhouse 9 53kg $201 12 Persan C Maher & D Eustace Luke Currie 11 53kg $26 13 Carif P & P Snowden Blaike McDougall 8 52.5kg $201 14 Master Of Wine Team Hawkes Fred Kersley 6 52.5kg $101 15 Pondus Robert Hickmott Rachel King 1 52.5kg $41 16 Grand Promenade C Maher & D Eustace Kerrin McEvoy 21 52kg $21 17 Miami Bound Danny O’Brien Patrick Moloney 17 52kg $151 18 Port Guillaume Ben & JD Hayes Harry Coffey 23 52kg $151 19 She’s Ideel Bjorn Baker Craig Newitt 20 52kg $101 20 Future Score Matt Cumani Dean Yendall 15 51.5kg $301 21 Tralee Rose Symon Wilde Dean Holland 12 51kg $17 22 Floating Artist C Maher & D Eustace Teo Nugent 10 50kg $18 23 Great House Chris Waller Michael Dee 7 50kg $31 24 Sir Lucan G Waterhouse & A Bott Glen Boss 18 50kg $26 Melbourne Cup Winners By Age No nine year old horse has ever won the Melbourne Cup. That’s bad news for Twilight Payment who having won the race as an eight year old, is seeking to join the greats like Makybe Diva, Rain Lover, Archer and Think Big by winning the Melbourne Cup in successive years as a nine year old. The stats say that won’t happen so he comes out of the field. Next best is the letter “P” with 14 wins, but the important stat is that the letters “I”, “Q”, “U”, “X” and “Y” have never won the cup. That’s bad news for 2021 Melbourne Cup favourite Incentivise as the stats say “I” horse names never win – out he comes. The letters “O” and “Z” have won just the one Melbourne Cup each so we can safely exclude those as well and say goodbye to Ocean Billy. The worst colour of Melbourne Cup horses are Grey, Bay or Brown, Black or Brown, and Black. All combined those coloured horses have won just 15 cups. History says we can safely remove Knight’s Order (Bay or Brown), Future Score (Black), and Floating Artist (Bay or Brown). Just 15 Melbourne Cup winners of the race have been Mares or Fillies – and three of those wins were all down just one mare – the great Makybe Diva. There is nothing of her quality in the 2021 field so we can safely pen Verry Elleegant (Mare), Miami Bound (Mare), She’s Ideel (Mare) and Tralee Rose(Mare). Out they come. It is fair to say we can remove all horses priced $101 or longer from the field to narrow down our winner by the numbers. We can safely remove Selino ($151), Johnny Get Angry ($101), Carif ($201), Master Of Wine ($101) and Port Guillame ($151). Most of those horses we have already excluded so that just leaves Grand Promenade (16) to come out of the race. In the history of the cup there have been just 7 winners to have crossed the line having three words in their name. That’s bad news for The Chosen One – out he comes. In the past 20 years no single winner of the race has carried less than 51kgs, and only the great Makybe Diva (58kgs) has carried more than 56.5kgs to victory. That stat tells us that neither Spanish Mission (57kgs) nor Great House (50kgs) can win the race. Out they go. Horses priced $26 have won seven cups, those priced $21 have won six cups; and those priced $51 have won three cups. Unfortunately for Delphi horses priced $19 have won just the one race – out it goes. Of the three horses left in our field both Persan and Pondus fit the criteria for jockeys colours, while Explosive Jack has to be excluded as the main colour is white. Explosive Jack is out. No. Silks Horse Trainer Jockey Barrier Weight Odds 12 Persan C Maher & D Eustace Luke Currie 11 53kg $26 15 Pondus Robert Hickmott Rachel King 1 52.5kg $21 2021 Melbourne Cup Winner By The Numbers After that exhaustive process we have left ourselves with just the two potential candidates. Both have single word names which are the most successful horse names to have. Both start with the letter “P” which is the second most successful letter. Persan Persan T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace J: Luke Currie Age: 5YO Color: Brown Sex: Gelding Sire: Pierro Dam: Ofcourseican Win: $26.00 Place: $7.50 Best odds at Sportsbet Career stats for Persan Career: 27: 7-5-3 Flemington: 10: 4-1-1 Distance: 1: 0-0-0 Wet: 11: 4-1-1 Good: 16: 3-4-2 Group 1: 5: 0-0-1 Win %: 26% Place %: 56% Melbourne Cup Results for Persan Melbourne Cup Results Year No. Result Trainer Jockey Barrier Weight Odds 2020 24 Persan finishes 5th of 23 Ciaron Maher & David Eustace Michael Dee 19 51kg $41 Last start: Persan 3rd to Incentivise – 2021 Caulfield Cup Featured casinos Pondus Pondus T: Robert Hickmott J: Rachel King Age: 6YO Color: Bay Sex: Gelding Sire: Sea The Moon Dam: Diablerette Win: $21.00 Place: $5.50 Best odds at Ladbrokes Career stats for Pondus Career: 19: 3-7-1 Flemington: 2: 0-1-0 Distance: 0: 0-0-0 Wet: 10: 2-3-0 Good: 9: 1-4-1 Group 1: 1: 0-0-0 Win %: 16% Place %: 58% Melbourne Cup results for Pondus The 2021 Melbourne Cup will be Pondus’ first start in the great race. Last Start: Pondus runs 4th to Lunar Flare in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup Featured casinos There are a few differentiators though between the two horses: Persan is a Brown Gelding while Pondus is a Bay Gelding. We know Bays are more successful than Browns in the big race winning 73 cups versus 37. Additionally we now know that horses carrying jockeys wearing Navy Blue (Pondus) have won 23 cups while Persan’s black coloured silks have won 18 races. That apparent advantage to Pondus is cancelled out though when we consider that Persan is five years of age versus Pondus who is six years of age. Five year olds have a slight advantage of six year olds having won 44 cups to 32. Persan also gets an advantage from the barrier draw having drawn the most successful gate of 11 while Pondus has to contend with barrier one which has won just the one cup. Persan gets a very small advantage based on the odds with horses priced $26 winning seven cups and horses priced $21 winning six Melbourne Cups. Persan (53kgs) also gets a fractional advantage looking at the history of the weights with horses carrying 53kgs having won seven Melbourne Cups while Pondus will carry 52.5kgs which have won six cups. The Melbourne Cup By The Numbers Winner Having reached our final two horses we find the small advantages in either direction for each horse are too small to decide conclusively. In the 2021 Melbourne Cup we recommend you back both Persan and Pondus knowing you have the weight of numbers and Melbourne Cup history on your side and riding with you.
