Danny (Daniel) Waugh, a Sale Greyhound Racing Club committee member for 16 years, has passed away.

Waugh, 49, lost a brave eight-year battle with an inoperable brain tumour on November 5.

Sale GRC general manager Peter Johnston paid tribute to Waugh, who was elected to the club’s committee in 2005, saying he was a loyal servant who was “always there helping the club”.

“Danny was probably not known by all the owners and trainers. He was ‘back of house’ as we like to say here – an ideas man who was constructive at Board meetings.

“He was always trying to improve things for participants, and he loved having a punt on the Sale dogs.”

Johnston added that Waugh’s wake was held at the club last Friday during a race meeting which was unfortunately abandoned due to 93mm of rain.

“We had earlier conducted a live stream of Danny’s funeral, and 120 mourners attended the club’s Winning Post Function Room to celebrate his life.

“Danny was posthumously awarded life membership of the Sale GRC at last week’s AGM.”

Waugh was a “mad St Kilda supporter”, according to Johnston, which was emotionally noted last Sunday when omen bet Go Saints Go – a black dog wearing the ‘red’ rug displaying a white No. 1 – won Race 1.

A qualified electrician, Waugh worked for Esso – offshore on the oil rigs in Bass Strait – for many years.

He was a loving husband to Tammy and devoted father to his four children – Alyssa, Emily, Indigo and Ostin.

Waugh’s late father – 2013 Ken Carr Medal winner John Waugh –became Sale GRC president in 1998, a position he held for over 20 years.
