HorseBetting’s Queensland form analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie tips for the nine-race metropolitan meeting at the Gold Coast this Saturday, including picks in the Recognition Stakes and the Eureka Stud Classic. The track is rated a Heavy 10 and the conditions are not improving, so the meeting is in some doubt, while the rail is in the true position. The first race of the afternoon will see a field of 10 two-year-olds line up over 1100m at 12:03pm AEST.

Recognition Stakes – Niccanova

Assuming the meeting goes ahead, the Listed Recognition Stakes will see most of the field from the Keith Noud Quality do battle again. Niccanova ran a solid fourth in that race on a Soft 5 and now gets onto a Heavy track, where he is yet to miss the first two in three starts. Trained by the in-form Steve Tregea, this son of Niconni was a winner at his only other start at the Gold Coast, but we have to go back to May 2017 for that race. Drawn in barrier eight under James Orman, he should get a nice run in transit and be swimming through the mud late. We are quite keen at the each-way quote.

Recognition StakesRace 7 – Niccanova (#2) $5.50 with Sportsbet

Eureka Stud Classic – Fleet Dove

While the top weight Wandabaa will be very hard to beat after running second to Lost And Running in The Hunter last time out at monster odds, we are happy to shop some value here in this Fillies & Mares race. Fleet Dove has had 13 starts in her career for four wins and three seconds, with two of those wins coming on a Heavy track in front of County Showgirl and Hancora Field in her first three starts, while she was defeated by the classy Kisukano in just her second career start. The mare by Not A Single Doubt was good in her final run last campaign when second to Starosa at Doomben, while she trialled in a hot heat behind the likes of Shooting For Gold and Totally Charmed. She flies fresh, has drawn well in barrier seven under Samantha Collett and gets her favoured conditions, so the $26 seems over the odds. This looks the value bet of the day.

Best Bet at Gold Coast – Minto’s Paradise

Typically one of our rules when it comes to backing horses at a metropolitan meeting is that they are proven Saturday metro horses, and while Minto’s Paradise is not really that, he doesn’t know it. What this three-year-old colt will know is that he is on his favourite track (T:3:3-0-0) and that it is absolutely bottomless (H:2:2-0-0), so we are happy to be with him. Trained by Les Kelly and to be ridden once again by Noel Callow, Minto’s Paradise should get to the front from barrier nine and be very hard to run down. The son of Benfica won by nearly four lengths here last time over 1400m, so the drop back in trip to 1300m but onto a Heavy 10 should only suit.

Best BetRace 4 – Minto’s Paradise (#2) $3.40 with Sportsbet

Next Best at Gold Coast – Heroic Sun

Admittedly, we have some bias towards this two-year-old who is affectionately known as Nugget, but luckily enough, he has some ability. Heroic Sun won impressively on debut at Doomben over 1050m, before he was just grabbed late in his second career start on November 13 over 1110m, but co-trainer Will Hulbert told HorseBetting.com.au prior to that race that he would be better suited to this one at the Gold Coast. The talented son of Heroic Valour should take plenty of benefit out of his second-up run, while he will also relish the rise to 1200m for the first time en route to the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Both runs to date have been on Soft tracks and he has handled them well, so here’s hoping he can get through the Heavy 10 in the opener. Regular rider Adin Thompson remains in the saddle from barrier eight, so if he can land one out, one back, he should take some serious beating.

Next BestRace 1 – Heroic Sun (#1) $4.60 with Sportsbet
