Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted July 20, 2018 Journalists Share Posted July 20, 2018 Hronis Racing’s Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky) went into last year’s GII San Diego H. at Del Mar a relative unknown. He exited the race with much more buzz thanks to an 8 1/2-length romp at the hooves of champion Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song). Coming into the annual opening-weekend feature this time around, Accelerate finds himself at the top of the handicap division, a position he’ll try to bolster by defending his San Diego title. Third in the GI Pacific Classic at this oval last August, the chestnut has racked up three graded stakes victories this term, including impressive open-lengths tallies in the GI Santa Anita H. and GI Gold Cup S. in Arcadia. He shows four interim breezes since the May 26 Gold Cup, capped by a half-mile spin in :48 2/5 (4/45) July 15. Should Accelerate stumble, Natalie Baffert’s Dr. Dorr (Lookin At Lucky) looks likeliest to capitalize. Reeling off three straight victories earlier this year, including a 7 1/4-length rout in the GII Californian S., he was no match for the favorite when second in the Gold Cup and looks to bounce back after retreating to finish ninth in the GII Suburban S. two weeks ago at Belmont. The Hronises could have another budding star in Catalina Cruiser (Union Rags). A debut winner last October at Santa Anita, the $370,000 Keeneland September buy earned an eye-opening 107 Beyer when returning with an allowance score May 19. The speedy colt will stretch out beyond six furlongs for the first time in the 1 1/16-mile San Diego. View the full article
