HorseBetting’s Queensland form analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the nine-race card at Doomben on Wednesday. It may be the first day of summer, but there are some cool and wet conditions around Brisbane on Tuesday and Wednesday, so we are expecting a downgrade of the track from the current Soft 6 status. The rail is out 8m for the entire course. A field of eight two-year-olds will contest the opening race of the afternoon at 1:03pm AEST, while the rescheduled Listed Recognition Stakes is set to jump at 5:10pm.

Listed Recognition Stakes – Ballistic Boy

After the Gold Coast’s metropolitan meeting was abandoned on Saturday morning, the Recognition Stakes has been moved to Wednesday’s program with the same field set to line up. While it is the same 10 runners, we are served up different conditions and a completely different track, so our selections have changed slightly. We were originally with Niccanova on the bottomless track at the Gold Coast – and if Doomben does cop plenty of rain over the next 48 hours, we may end up back on him – but the conditions that we are currently dealt with makes it hard for us to go past Chris Anderson’s Ballistic Boy. The five-year-old raced twice over August and September and won both while showing a lot more tactical speed than what we are used to seeing from him, so he should carry plenty of residual fitness into this race on Wednesday. There is not a great deal of speed on paper, so we anticipate that Luke Dittman will settle the Smart Missile gelding a touch closer from barrier six. Ballistic Boy has won three and placed four times from nine starts at Doomben, his fresh record is second to none and he has won on a Soft 5, so providing it doesn’t get too wet before Wednesday at 5:10pm, we are happy to be with this resuming galloper.

Doomben Best Bet – Heroic Son

While our top pick in the Recognition has changed between Saturday and the time of writing, one thing that hasn’t is our best bet. Peter & Will Hulbert were set to saddle up their promising two-year-old in the Member’s 2YO Plate at the Gold Coast on Saturday, and although that race got postponed to this coming Friday night at the Sunshine Coast, the stable have instead opted to run Heroic Son at Doomben on Wednesday. This son of Heroic Valour won well on debut at this track, before he got nailed right on the line over 1110m on November 13. This colt had been well supported ahead of Saturday’s race, so we aren’t expecting any flash odds here, but we do expect him to win. Originally handicapped with 58.5kg, regular rider Adin Thompson can utilise his 2kg claim to bring Heroic Son right into the race with 56.5kg. If he doesn’t lead from barrier two, he will be right thereabouts, which should be enough to see him reign supreme once again. All roads lead to the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast in a little over one month’s time.

Next Best Bet at Doomben – Astro Boy Toy

We are hoping to bookend the card with our best bets on Wednesday with the Toby & Trent Edmonds-trained Astro Boy Toy in the last. The five-year-old son of Deep Field was first-up on November 10 at Ipswich from a 15-month spell and ran out of his skin, going down by eight-tenths of a length to Dragon Miss over 1200m. Astro Boy Toy has raced at Doomben on three occasions and has finished in the minor money twice, so we know he handles the track. The gelding is yet to win on rain-affected going, although he has only raced on a Soft track once when second on a Soft 7 last time out. This lightly raced galloper has plenty of ability and brings some quality form into a race like this around the likes of Phobetor, Stampe and Chauffeur, so he should be able to measure up in this 1350m Class 3 Plate now that he has some fitness under his belt.

Next BestRace 9 – Astro Boy Toy (#1) $2.90 with Sportsbet

Best Value Bet at Doomben – Thunder Mania

One horse who we have always had a bit of time for is the John Symons & Sheila Laxon-trained Thunder Mania. This four-year-old gelding has only had nine starts, but he has won three of those and finished sixth behind Rothfire at Group 1 level as a two-year-old. The son of Snitzel is having his first run since January, when he was 4.4 lengths behind Yao Dash at the Gold Coast, but he had a very sharp trial over 850m at the Sunshine Coast on November 16 where he won stylishly, albeit by just under one length. Thunder Mania won his maiden at Doomben and placed behind Shooting For Gold almost 12 months ago at the track, while his only other start here came four lengths behind Isotope and Away Game at Listed level. The horse has won on Soft going before, so the conditions should be no concern, while he will get some serious weight relief from Jaden Lloyd as he claims 2kg. From barrier six with only 55kg on his back, Thunder Mania can run a very good race in his racetrack return.

Best ValueRace 5 – Thunder Mania (#4) $4.80 with Sportsbet
