Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 6, 2022 Journalists Share Posted January 6, 2022 What Ascot Races Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA When Saturday, January 8, 2022 First Race 12:27pm AWST Watch Live Streaming Live at Sportsbet HorseBetting’s Western Australian racing analyst has previewed Ascot’s nine-race card on Saturday and brings you his best bets, value bet and quaddie numbers. The track is rated a Good 4, and the rail is out 9m for the entire course. The first race will jump at 12:27pm AWST. Ascot’s Best Bet Of The Day – Island Charm In the fourth race of the afternoon, Roy Rogers and Chris Parnham combine with last start winner, Island Charm. The four-year-old mare proved too strong late over 1200m at this track to win by three quarters of a length, making it her first win in 11 months. The daughter of Hinchinbrook has always been around the mark though, running in the top three on eight occasions from 17 career starts. Rogers has opted to drop her back in trip to 1000m, so that is the only knock we have on her, however she stays on 54kg and is going to have plenty of clear air in the straight from the outside alley. We expect to see Parnham throw everything at her in the concluding stages to lift her over the line. Best BetRace 4 – Island Charm (#5) $3.20 with Sportsbet Next Best Bet – The Velvet Queen Chris Parnham can make it a race-to-race double if he can salute on our two best bets, with one of them being three-year-old filly, The Velvet Queen. This daughter of Universal Ruler won back-to-back races to start this campaign, before disappointing as favourite in the 3YO Sires Stakes last time out when running ninth, albeit beaten only two lengths. Trainer Darren McAuliffe has now stepped this talented filly out to 1400m for the first time which will suit her down to the ground, while she should appreciate the slight drop in grade. Drawn well in barrier two, we are hoping to see Parnham settle a touch closer in the run, so that this lightly raced filly doesn’t have too much ground to make up in the straight. This looks right up her alley. Next BestRace 3 – The Velvet Queen (#8) $2.20 with Sportsbet Best Value At Ascot – All In Red We thought this was a race in two between Blazing Away and All In Red, and given one is $3 and the other is $8, it was a no brainer on who we’ll be backing. Kylie Craig’s mare has had 15 starts, winning three and finishing as the runner up on five occasions, and she comes in to this on the back of a spell after running three-straight seconds. The mare by Blackfriars appears to be pretty adaptable, having won from both on the speed and off the speed, so jockey Shaun O’Donnell is going to have plenty of options from barrier three. In her only start at this track, All In Red came from last to run fourth behind five-times winner Bruce Almighty in a 1500m No Metro Wins Handicap in February. This mare doesn’t boast the best first up record, but her last run was mid-October, so she should still hold some residual fitness, while the 1400m should suit her. This isn’t out of reach.
