Pakenham Racecourse is scheduled to host an eight-race card on Thursday night, and HorseBetting’s Victorian tipping expert presents his best bets and free quaddie picks as well as odds from Australia’s leading online bookmakers. The track is rated a Soft 5, while the rail is out 2m from the 400m to the winning post and then true for the remainder of the course. Racing is scheduled to commence at 5:45pm AEDT.

Pakenham Best Bet – Spooning

We need to wait until our final race of the night for our best bet of the night, when Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr will be hoping Spooning can go one better than her last-start second at Moonee Valley. The four-year-old bay mare out of Ocean Park chased home the smart Pitchanun on December 31 last time out, falling short despite looming to win inside the final 100m. She returns to scene of her only career win and stays at the mile, so we like her chances. From barrier two, Craig Newitt will need a touch of luck on the home turn in his bid to find a gap, but if he can, then Spooning has a turn of foot the rest of the final simply cannot match.

Best betRace 8 – Spooning (#7) $4 with Sportsbet

Next Best Bet at Pakenham – Star Smash

We were with the Simon Zahra-trained Star Smash at Cranbourne on January 7 when he simply was no match for a potential smart one in Letzxcel. The three-year-old son of Star Turn settled outside the leader on that day, but when put under pressure by the eventual winner, he just didn’t go on with them. With two runner-up performances to his name to begin this campaign, Star Smash may never get a better chance to break his maiden than what he does on Thursday night. From barrier 11, we expect Jamie Mott to have him lobbed outside the leader, and with a touch of race fitness on his side, it should be sixth time lucky for Star Smash.

Next BestRace 2 – Star Smash (#7) $3.90 with Sportsbet

Best Value Bet at Pakenham – Beehunter

John Sadler will be hoping Beehunter gets a bit more luck than what he got at Sandown on January 3, and if he does, he looks a good bet in the opening leg of the quaddie. The five-year-old bay gelding out of Toronado ran into plenty of backsides in the home straight over 1000m and went to the line under a hold when finishing 11th, beaten 3.5 lengths. He draws barrier three this time round, and with Jye McNeil hopping on board he should be given every chance with even luck. Beehunter is an above-average galloper down on confidence and looks a great bet at $5 with Sportsbet.

Best ValueRace 5 – Beehunter (#5) $5 with Sportsbet
