HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst has previewed the seven-race card at Canterbury on Friday evening and brings you his best bets and suggested quaddie numbers, with odds from Australia’s top bookmakers. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is in the +3m position for the entire course. The first race of the night will jump at 6:15pm AEDT.

Canterbury Best Bet – Jal Lei

John O’Shea and Tommy Berry combine in race three with a very promising filly in Jal Lei. The three-year-old daughter of Sebring has only raced three times, placing third at this track on debut 11 months ago, before returning in August with a dominant last-to-first win at Kembla Grange, then winning in similar fashion on the Kensington track at Randwick in mid-August. O’Shea has been patient with his talented galloper, spacing her runs well and placing her correctly, so we expect her to be ready to fire first-up after two solid trials. She should get all the favours from barrier five.

Best BetRace 3 – Jal Lei (#7) $1.75 with Sportsbet

Next Best at Canterbury – Maccomo

In the first leg of the quaddie, Joseph Pride will leg up the in-form apprentice Reece Jones aboard his last-start winner Maccomo. The five-year-old gelding led throughout after heavy backing at this track and distance on January 7 and didn’t let his followers down, saluting by 1.75 lengths. The son of Charm Spirit stays in Benchmark 72 company on Friday, but he does rise from 52.5kg to 56kg, although from gate three Jones won’t have to do too much work to find the front, which will see Maccomo prove very hard to run down once again, especially at this track.

Next BestRace 4 – Maccomo (#4) $6 with Sportsbet

Best Value at Canterbury – Wolfburn

Bjorn Baker and Josh Parr combine in the opening race of the night with Wolfburn in a 3YO Colts & Geldings Maiden Handicap over 1250m. Lining up in his eighth start, the gelding has already contested the highest level when 13th in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes last autumn behind Captivant. The son of Snitzel has placed twice in three runs since, running behind some nice horses, so he can be forgiven for being beaten on those days. With two winning trials under his belt in preparation for this first-up run, Wolfburn should be rock-hard fit and able to make the most of what isn’t the strongest field.

Best ValueRace 1 – Wolfburn (#7) $6.50 with Sportsbet
