Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 28, 2022 Journalists Share Posted January 28, 2022 What Bega Cup Day Where Sapphire Coast Turf Club – 1695 Sapphire Coast Dr, Wallagoot NSW 2550 When Sunday, January 30, 2022 First Race 1:15pm AEDT Feature Race R7: Bega Showcase Cup (1600m) Watch Live Streaming Live at Sportsbet It’s Bega Cup Day this weekend, and HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst has picked out his best bets and quaddie numbers for the Sapphire Coast’s eight-race program on Sunday. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is in the true position, and the first race is set to jump at 1:15pm AEDT. Bega Cup – Excelman In Sunday’s feature race, Richard Laming and Jason Maskiell combine with top-weight Excelman. The five-year-old son of Reliable Man does have a bit against him, drawing the outside alley in the field of 14, as well as having to lug 62.5kg, but he is certainly the class horse of the field. On Melbourne Cup Day, he proved too strong over 1400m in the Greys Benchmark 90, before going on to run third at Group 3 level in his next start, and then beating only the one runner home when favourite last time out on January 8 at Caulfield over 2000m. With three weeks between runs, Excelman will come back to the mile, where he can make it a bit of a staying test given his fitness level fourth-up. He has to be on his A-game, but he can win. Bega CupRace 7 – Excelman (#1) $9 with Sportsbet Best Bet – Densaur In the third race of the day, Theresa Bateup saddles up Densaur in a 1400m Maiden Plate where he looks very hard to beat. The three-year-old son of Denman was unlucky not to win when first-up at this track when second, before going to town and running third at big odds at Warwick Farm behind Publicist. He now comes back to the Sapphire Coast, where he has run well in the past in two starts, while Brock Ryan’s retention of the ride is a big plus. From barrier eight, he should get plenty of chances to break through at start six. Best BetRace 3 – Densaur (#6) $2.20 with Sportsbet Next Best – Cecil Street Lad Richard Laming has sent a swag of horses to the Sapphire Coast on Sunday, and we think he can get the chocolates in a few races. In race two, he saddles up Cecil Street Lad, who looks to be classes above his rivals. Having won on debut in Victoria, the three-year-old gelding was sent around behind Ingratiating in the Group 3 Vain Stakes at his third career start. He does have to carry 65.5kg and come from barrier 10, but he is likely to cross and lead, which should make him hard to run down. We do concede he will be there to be caught, but he may just be too good in this race. Next BestRace 2 – Cecil Street Lad (#1) $3.70 with Sportsbet Best Value – Lai See In the first leg of the quaddie, Winona Costin hops aboard four-year-old mare Lai See. The Lynne Morrison-trained galloper was a last-start winner at Moruya over 1010m. The daughter of Squamosa got a good run in transit from barrier five on that occasion, before peeling out and hitting the line hard. Now out to 1200m, she should be able to try and get into a prominent position before stretching out late to get the job done over the six furlongs. Barrier 14 is a bit of a query, but it is an open race.
