Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 29, 2022 Journalists Posted January 29, 2022 Sent off the 7-2 third choice and just one of two horses in the field for Saturday's GII San Vicente S. not trained by Bob Baffert, MyRacehorse and Spendhthrift Farm's FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (c, 3, American Pharoah–Just Louise, by Five Star Day) led them a merry chase and proved not for catching to cause a mild upset. Very quickly into stride from the inside stall, the $300,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase graduate showed the way through a swift opening couple of furlongs in :21.86, as Baffert stablemates Pinehurst (Twirling Candy), the GI Del Mar Futurity winner, and McLaren Vale (Gun Runner) chased from second and third. Forbidden Kingdom, a latest second to the Baffert-conditioned Messier (Empire Maker) in the GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar in November, still had the call after a half in :44.49, but his two closest pursuers were joined by favored 'TDN Rising Star' Doppelganger (Into Mischief) four wide at the quarter pole. But Forbidden Kingdom was kept alive by Juan Hernandez and held nicely through the final eighth of a mile to win a touch cozily. Doppelganger finished a disappointing fourth. Sales history: $300,000 Ylg '20 FTKSEL. O-My Racehorse & Spendthrift Farm; B-Springhouse Farm (KY); T-Richard Mandella.
