Last year's GI Pennsylvania Derby winner and GI Kentucky Derby and GI Belmont S.-placed Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) has set himself up well for a run in the G1 Dubai World Cup on Mar. 26 with a five-length victory in Friday's G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 at Meydan. Niggled from the gates by William Buick to get to the lead, Hot Rod Charlie narrowly led the way around the first turn before conceding a short lead to Al Nefud (GB) down the backstretch. Al Nefud, under Ryan Moore, pulled out all the stops to take it to Hot Rod Charlie at the top of the lane, but the American raider soon pulled clear to win in comfortable fashion.
