Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted February 19, 2022 Journalists Share Posted February 19, 2022 By Jonny Turner It wasn’t just Best Trio that had a new experience this week with his win at Rangiora on Saturday. The Dean Taylor trained pacer capped consistent form when running to victory in race 7 for driver John Morrison. Best Trio didn’t start his career as a complete product, but he’s starting to develop into one for his breeder-owners Grahame and Bev Scurr. “He is a lovely wee horse and he is getting better all the time.” Taylor said. “He went some terrific trials early on, but then he would panic and do things wrong, he was just trying to do everything too fast.” “He has broken when they have gone really quick.” “He has just had a lot of wee things go wrong, but he has come out of that now.” “He is a nice horse.” Best Trio had to do his share of work before running to victory. Trapped wide early, Morrison pressed forward to the lead before the pacer found plenty under his urgings in the home straight. While Best Trio broke maidens on Saturday, Taylor broke through for a different kind of first earlier this week. Despite being a Group One winning horseman with several decades of involvement in harness racing, the trainer had not presented a horse for sale at the National Yearling Sales before this year. Taylor sold three yearlings in his first ever draft and enjoyed the experience. “I have always been there walking around buying horses, so it was a bit different being there to sell them.” “But it was good, we sold three including one we offered for one client that was bought by another of our clients.” The same front-running tactics that secured Best Trio’s win also proved successful in Saturday’s Team Teal Challenge event. Ineka Lee insisted on keeping the lead early with Taurus which proved to be the winning of the race as the pacer kept giving in the home straight to deny Himself and Jo Herbert who were forced to sit parked outside them.
