It is Canberra Mile Day at the nation’s capital on Friday, with the running of the $150,000 event the highlight on a nine-race card. HorseBetting’s Nicholas Lloyd brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting, as well as his preview of the feature race. The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course, but storms forecast for Thursday and Friday could see the track downgraded before the running of the first race, which is scheduled for 1pm AEDT.

Canberra Mile Top Tip – Lackeen

James Cummings and Grant Buckley combine in Friday’s feature with five-year-old gelding Lackeen. The son of Shamardal was a narrow winner at Randwick over this distance on January 22, before running a good second behind Frosty Rocks in the Gardenia Stales on February 5 over the Randwick mile once again. Lackeen should be rock-hard fit now, while he will relish being over 1600m once again. From barrier three, Buckley will be able to find the box seat aboard the Godolphin runner, and he should prove too good for them on a track which will suit.

Canberra’s Best Bet Of The Day – Let’s Karaka Deel

With no prices available yet, it could leave us with plenty of egg on our face by tipping Let’s Karaka Deel as our best bet, because if we are honest, he is a deadest $1.04 chance. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained galloper returns as a gelding in his first run as a four-year-old. In his past five starts, the son of Dundeel has finished fifth in the Victoria Derby, second in the Mornington Guineas, Port Adelaide Guineas and South Australian Derby, before running 10th in the Queensland Derby as an $8 chance last May. He should have panels on his rivals on Friday, even over 1600m and from the wide barrier (14). The wet track will be his go, and Class 1 company for this horse would be like Usain Bolt running in the Stawell Gift. We will be baffled if he gets beaten.

Best BetRace 9 – Let’s Karaka Deel (#4) $2.10 with Sportsbet

Next Best Bet – Winnertakesitall

While this race isn’t quite a feature on Friday, the $40,000 Black Opal Preview over 1000m will give us a good guide on these two-year-olds who will press on towards the Group 3 Black Opal in a couple of weeks. Peter & Paul Snowden are arguably the best trainers of young horses, especially at this time of year, and this filly doesn’t look to be lacking ability. The daughter of Snitzel won a trial at Randwick on February 17 in fine style over 743m, leading all of the way to win easily under a hold. From barrier nine, Andrew Adkins can pursue a forward role on this filly and she can make a winning debut at Canberra.

Next BestRace 7 – Winnertakesitall (#14) $7.50 with Sportsbet

Best Value At Canberra – Williams Bay

Richard & Michael Freedman saddle up three-year-old filly Williams Bay in the third race of the afternoon – a 1000m Maiden Handicap. This daughter of Capitalist has had 10 starts in her career for five minor placings, four of which have come at her last four starts. Two starts ago, Williams Bay peeled some great ground of Shades Of Rose who set a track record at Bathurst at her next start and goes around at Canterbury on Friday night, so that form looks good enough. She got a fair way out of her ground at Goulburn last time when stepping back in trip, but she did do her best work late. Now at 1000m again, Jean Van Overmeire will hopefully look to put her in the race from the get-go, despite drawing barrier 15. With even luck, this looks her race.

Best ValueRace 3 – Williams Bay (#6) $4.40 with Sportsbet
