Pinehurst Takes Them Gate To Wire In Saudi Derby

PINEURST (c, 3, Twirling Candy–Giant Win, by Giant's Causeway) found his way to the front in Saturday's G3 Saudi Derby going a one-turn 1600 meters at King Abdulaziz Race Track and managed to hold sway to strike for America and jockey Flavien Prat. Last year's GI Del Mar Futurity hero, who was exiting a runner-up effort in the GII San Vicente S. at Santa Anita Jan. 29, bounced well from a wide gate and set his sights on the early lead, as I Am Magic (Ire) (Magician {Ire}) pressured from the inside with Cattleya S. winner Consigliere (Jpn) (Drefong) close in tow. Narrowly in front turning for home as Sovereign Prince (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) chimed in three out, Pinehurst kept finding into the final eighth of a mile and was home about a half-length to the good of Japan's Sekifu (Jpn) (Henny Hughes), who pulled back the final margin to about a half-length.
