Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted February 28, 2022 Journalists Posted February 28, 2022 Trainer Bob Baffert and Amr Zedan, the trainer and owner of the disqualified Kentucky Derby first-place finisher Medina Spirit (Protonico) have filed a motion to stay Baffert's 90-day suspension and Medina Spirit (Protonico)'s disqualification from the Kentucky Derby by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission 9KHRC) in Franklin County, Ky., Circuit Court on Monday. First across the wire in the 2021 GI Kentucky Derby, Medina Spirit (Protonico) was been officially disqualified by the Kentucky Horse Racing (KHRC) Board of Stewards, which also handed trainer Bob Baffert a 90-day suspension and a $7,500 fine, on Feb. 21, 2022. On Friday, Feb. 25, the KHRC denied Baffert's request for a stay of that suspension, an a stay of its decision to disqualify Medina Spirit from the Derby. The motion reads: “Come the Plaintiffs, Bob Baffert and Zedan Racing Stables, Inc., by counsel, and pursuant to KRS 230.320(2)(f) and Civil Rule 65.04, hereby move the Court for entry of an Order and/or a Temporary Injunction against the Defendant, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, staying the enforcement of the penalties contained within Stewards Rulings 21-009 and 21-0010 pending the appeal of those rulings. A Memorandum of Law in support of Plaintiffs' Motion is attached hereto.” The filing adds, “This Motion shall come on for hearing before the Franklin Circuit Court as soon as counsel may be heard.” The motion was filed by Baffert's attorney W. Craig Robertson from the Lexington law firm of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, and and Clark Brewster, representing Zedan Racing Stables. This story will be updated.
