Flemington Racecourse is set to host a bumper nine-race card on Saturday afternoon, headlined by the Group 1 Australian Guineas for the three-year-olds. The track is rated a Good 4, with the rail coming out 2m having been in the true position last time we raced here on February 19. Racing is set to get underway at 12:35pm AEDT with the Australian Childhood Foundation Plate at Listed level for the two-year-olds.

Race 1: Australian Childhood Foundation Plate (1000m)

The day kicks off with a Listed affair over 1000m for the juveniles and we are happy to side with last start debut Moonee Valley winner Superset. The Shea Eden-trained Super One gelding tracked the speed approaching the home turn and when asked for an effort in the straight was quick to put away his more highly credentialled rivals. This looks to be no harder than his debut effort and with ben Melham in red hot form since returning from suspension, we’re happy to take the $9.50 on offer from Sportsbet.

Race 2: Roy Higgins Quality (2600m)

Despite the obvious potential of the Chris Waller-trained Crystal Pegasus, we are willing to side with the Rob Blacker-trained Tigertiger who steps up to the more suitable 2600m, rather than the 2000m. He chased home Crystal Pegasus over 2000m last time out but was certainly warming up and doing his best work late. Having claimed the Listed Bagot Handicap when defeating subsequent Stakes winner Skelm two starts back over 2800m, the 2600m looks right up his alley and we are happy to take the $5 on offer rather than the odds-on quote for Crystal Pegasus.

Race 3: BM90 Handicap (1200m)

We were with the Grahame Begg-trained Rose Quartz when she thrashed a BM84 field at the Flemington 1200m on February 19 and she gave us no reason to jump off her now. This race looks to not a whole lot harder than the field she put 3.25 lengths on and with just 54kg, Rose Quartz looks the goods in this. She has two wins from as many starts at the track and distance and considering she is drawn alongside Imperial Lad who will look to dictate terms throughout, Micky Dee should be able to track the speed throughout aboard the mare. Her turn of foot is electric and when asked for an effort inside the final furlong, we expect Rose Quartz to put this field away with relative ease.

Race 4: Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m)

Call us crazy, but we are willing to make a case for the Danny O’Brien-trained Maracana at a big price in the Frances Tressady Stakes. Resuming off a four-month break, the three-year-old Shamexpress filly began her career with consecutive wins in her initial campaign during the spring, before running into a couple of smart ones at Group and Listed level. She was last seen when beaten under a half-length in the TAB Trophy by Spirit Of Gaylard who goes around later in the card in the Australian Guineas. She will be giving her rivals a start in this, considering she will want to settle at the rear of the field. However, she has a really nice turn of foot and with plenty of these looking for the lead, the race should be set up for someone like Maracana to finish over the top of some vulnerable leaders. The $31 on offer from Sportsbet is massive overs and a price we are more than willing to take.

Race 5: Inglis Sprint (1200m)

The Bjorn Baker-trained Overpass certainly brings the strongest formlines to the Inglis Sprint and despite needing to lug 59.5kg should be far too good for this lot. The three-year-old Vancouver colt wasn’t beaten too far by the smart Lost And Running in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes when finishing second. Prior to that he won the Expressway Stakes beating subsequent winners Forbidden Love and Anamoe franking his form. There is certainly no Anamoe’s or Lost And Running’s in this field and with straight track experience in his locker, Overpass looks the one to be with.

Race 6: Blamey Stakes (1600m)

The superstar that is Zaaki is set to return in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes on his way to a run in the All Star Mile at the track and distance in a fortnight. Despite Annabel Neasham wanting to have her star galloper resume over 1300m in the Canterbury Stakes, the torrential rain in Sydney has seen her send the three0time Group 1 winner to the Blamey. From barrier one, we expect Jamie Kah to track Corner Pocket (who is chasing a ninth straight win) where he goes and with even luck in the home straight Zaaki should prove far too good for this lot. Dare we say it, a moral.

Race 7: Australian Guineas (1600m)

The Group 1 Australian Guineas over the infamous Flemington 1600m is the feature event on Saturday’s nine0race program. With Lunar Fox causing a massive upset when paying upwards of $151 last year, is there another upset brewing in the 2022 edition of the time-honoured affair?

Race 8: ATA/Bob Hoysted Handicap (1000m)

The Listed ATA/Bob Hoysted Handicap over the 1000m looks to be one of the toughest races of the day and we are giving the Brett Cavanough-trained It’s Me a big chance at a double figure price. The 2020 Kosciuszko winner returned from a 69-week injury-enforced layoff with a midfield finish in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes at Randwick over 1200m and is only going to improve from that first-up run. Having been previously undefeated prior to that run, the mare is one with plenty of ability and with two wins from as many starts at 1000m, we’re happy to side with her. She has an electric turn of foot when at her best and we think It’s Me should prove too hard to hold out in the third leg of the quaddie. On a side note, good luck to any of you brave souls backing Brooklyn Hustle.

Race 9: BM84 Handicap (1600m)

Having started her career with four consecutive wins, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Yonce looks the best way to “get out” on Australian Guineas Day. She returns to the Flemington mile, having won in impressive style back on February 19 and considering this looks no harder than that day she should take a power of beating. The four-year-old Chosir mare gave her rivals a start and in the process gave them a walloping when hitting the line strongly down the middle of the track. Market rival Gentleman Roy will give her something to chase out in front, but we expect Yonce’s untapped ability to be the difference in this. The $3.20 available with Bet365 is appealing.
